Abstract

During the last century, Crime and Punishment has been adapted for the screen more than sixty times in over fifteen languages. However, the representations of the female character Sonia on screen have not been broadly researched. In this chapter, I share some findings from my practice-based PhD research in Film. I will look into English language screen adaptations of the novel, creative interpretations of Sonia by British and Australian actresses, and my film Transgressing. This film attempts to cross the borders of time and culture in the process of modern-day adaptation with the international version of Sonia Marmeladova.
