Abstract

This report presents the results of a survey that was conducted in 2015 with secondary school English teachers in Luxembourg, and was intended to help establish a set of baseline data on the end-of-secondary school-leaving exam for English administered in Luxembourg (the Examen de fin d’études secondaires/secondaires techniques - Anglais). The general aim of the baseline study was to take stock of the current approach to evaluating learners’ English proficiency at the end of secondary school, and to gauge the strengths and weaknesses of the present exam. More specifically, the survey explored the views of an important stakeholder group - English teachers - and aimed to establish a representative overview of the perceptions, insights, and opinions of English language teachers in Luxembourg on the exam currently in use. On the basis of the findings, a set of recommendations has been formulated to inform further development of the exam, in line with more recent developments in second language teaching and assessment in Europe.
