N2 - This meta-synthesis sought to understand ‘racial/ethnic’ identity development for international transracial adoptees. A systematic search for studies was conducted across five databases resulting in the inclusion of 12 studies in the meta-synthesis, which was informed by meta-ethnography methodology. The study proposes a conceptual model of ‘racial/ethnic’ identity development, which was represented by three overarching themes: 1. Becoming aware of difference: Identity as ‘other’; 2. Exploring identity: Identity as ‘in-between’; and 3. Negotiating identity: Identity as ‘meaningful’, which were influenced by sociocultural norms and contextual influences. Implications for practice, research limitations and suggestions for future research are provided.
