N2 - In this interview, Ruth Wodak talks about the elements that characterise far-right discourses, and explains how politicians like Donald Trump and Silvio Berlusconi shifted the boundaries of what is ‘sayable’ in the public discourse. She then discusses the authoritarian turn that is characterising many democracies across the world, arguing that rather than fascism the current trend seems to indicate that we are going towards authoritarianism. Moreover, she discusses the normalisation of far-right discourses, the opportunities that the Covid-19 pandemic offers to populist and authoritarian actors, and the role of new social movements in shaping the agenda of public discourse.
