N1 - This article critiques a prevailing concept, health literacy, and its efficacy in today's health care system. Spanning, from 2001-2006, the meta-analysis is composed of 92 secondary references in law, public health, literacy, and medicine, which cites additional, diverse research studies. A version of this article was presented at a conference at Lancaster University on the Knowledge-Based Economy, at which a member of an editorial board of JCEPS recommended that I submit it to the journal for publication. It was reviewed by an outside reviewer and the editor, and the article was accepted. It is in an online format and is easily accessible. It has had over 2000 viewings and was also featured on medical science and public health websites, including a promotion to members of a National Institute for Literacy listserv.The article appeals to a broad academic , policy maker, and practitioner-based audience.
