Abstract

This article considers the topic of second/foreign language (L2) testing and assessment in contemporary society, giving examples of their deployment for various purposes in contexts such as education, employment and migration. The challenges of developing language tests for specific purposes are explored and the pervasive role of the English language globally will be touched upon as part of a broader discussion on the complex linguistic and ethical issues associated with L2 testing and assessment in society.
