Abstract

This article is the product of research conducted in the preparation of a submission to the Department of Justice National Crime Forum in march of last year. The latest statistics in the area have been used to further the argument. The Domestic Violence Act 1996 provides a number of civil law remedies for the problem, ranging from the safety order to the barring order; this article, however, is cocnerned only with the role of the criminal law in combatting domestic assault.
