How might a commons be governed if non-human species are treated as equal actors? The most salient decolonization critiques in the commons field identify the need to account for other ontologies and epistemologies. A recurring theme, particularly in indigenous ontologies, is the location of humans as part of nature rather than separate from nature. What does it mean to govern a commons as a more-than-human community? This design workshop will explore the IAD framework and design principles for managing a commons through the lens of more-than-human design, a design methodology that asks us to design for non-human species alongside humans. We will use a scenario involving the management of urban green space to explore how non-human species might be represented in commoning. How do frameworks and design principles need to change to account for more-than-human commoning? The workshop will use hands-on activities to design a more-than-human commons (participants are also welcome to observe only).
