Abstract

This chapter explores the opportunities that the challenges offer to design researchers and several mitigation strategies for addressing these challenges. Several challenges have been presented regarding conducting fieldwork and engaging research participants within a global south context, such as resistance to data capture methods and technologies, issues with power trust and consent. Creativity can be also applied in dealing with challenges related to fieldwork and especially participant resistance to specific data capture methodologies. Issues related to power and trust can be resolved through actions that support spending time in the Global South country where the research will take place and constant renegotiation with the project partners and communities that people are engaging in the research. Applying design research methods in a Global South context is an area with significant challenges related to truth, knowledge construction and qualitative research literacy but also opportunities.
