This book is written to historians of literacy, schools and libraries, but also to practitioners. It cites several hundred references and hosts an extensive bibliography. This book was first presented as a paper at the 2004 AERA conference and was subsequently turned into a book through Teachers College Press, who relied on the opinions of two outside reviewers and the editor. The first author, Sondra, initiated the idea, and led the book's direction as well as the writing. There are six chapters, four of which she wrote the first drafts. She also took the lead on writing and editing (structural and copy) all subsequent drafts, including doing all of the final copyediting, writing, and reference checks. It will most likely be read by school educators but also by library & information science educators due to the dual focus of libraries with schools and technology.
