N2 - This is an essay about a trip taken up the Suriname and Commerwijne rivers in Suriname, in March 2011. It was taken in conjunction with a UK shipping company, J.P. Knight's, which ferries bauxite aaround Suriname on barges. The journey passes several so-called 'maroon communities', the descendents of escaped slaves who formed autonomous 'Africanised' communities in the South American jungle but whose recent history has been blighted by civil war and displacement. In the essay I compare the 21st century land- and riverscape to that depicted on a plantations' map drawn up in 1666.
