T1 - “Significant nothingness” in geographical fieldwork

N2 - In 2021, a “return” to fieldwork was highly anticipated by geographers. When I returned to the field this year, what I repeatedly found was nothing. In this paper, I reflect on my experiences of continually finding nothing, contending that this “significant nothingness” is going to dictate our worlds and scholarship for years to come. I argue that recognising the significance of nothingness is perhaps one of the greatest challenges, and questions, facing geographers of the near future. Thus, the aim of this forum paper is twofold: first, to reflect on a return to fieldwork during a still-ongoing pandemic; and, secondly, to explore the significant role of nothingness in the field.
