The history of futures is not a discipline, yet a need for history increasingly corresponds to a need for the future. How is it possible to combine these needs starting from design cultures? The anticipatory dimension of the project, the need to think critically about possible and desirable futures, the cultural destiny of conceptual and operational processes and tools, cross the text as a sample of visions born at the moment when the Italian cultures of the project meet, on the one hand, the approaches proposed by studies on the future and, on the other hand, on the other, the themes of environmentalism, to join a critique of contemporaneity and propose reflections that are still relevant today. These narratives tell a cross-section of the history of Italian design and document a possible trajectory of the relationship between design cultures, futures and sustainability that matured at the turn of the Sixties and Seventies. At the same time, they are an opportunity to establish relationships with ongoing research; to welcome new perspectives of interpretation of the historical events of contemporary design; to question the impact of the tools, approaches, processes used by the cultures of the project and its actors to prefigure future scenarios; to verify the paths through which to activate a dynamic knowledge of the temporality of our material culture; to open up to a multidisciplinary methodological reflection",
