Bibliographic note

This RFC (Request for Comments) was published through the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) - the body that standardises protocols for the Internet. UDP Lite was designed to provide better support for applications that require headers to be checksummed but are tolerant to errors in the payload (e.g. real-time multimedia applications). The protocol adds flexibility to UDP by allowing applications to specify parts of the packet as being either checksum-sensitive or checksum-insensitive. UDP Lite is on the IETF Standards Track and has already appeared in versions of the Linux and Microsoft Windows operating systems.
