T1 - Understanding understanding: Phenomenological Hermeneutics in Thomas Lehmen's Clever.
AU - Stewart, N. H.
N1 - Specifically concerned with the working methods of the leading contemporary Tanztheater choreographer Thomas Lehmen, the chapter was developed from a paper presented at the IFTR's Jaipur 2003 conference, and appears in the section 'Trans-Action, Encounter and Traditional Space' of a volume broadly concerned with cultural identity. Drawing on his own experience as a dancer and maker in Lehmen's production of Clever (2001, rev. 2003), he argues that Lehmen's methods of sourcing and composing performance material are themselves hermeneutic in that they actually frame the deep structures and conditions which make understanding itself possible. The chapter demonstrates that, by juxtaposing the aestheticised movement of dancers against other modes of presentation, and by drawing attention to the occasion and place of performance, Lehmen's work is increasingly concerned with a critique of what Gadamer, in his philosophical hermeneutics, calls aesthetic differentiation. The chapter is part of a sustained investigation into and long association with Lehmen's work. Apart from being selected to perform in Clever, funded by a Dance Northwest Extend Commission under the Regional Arts Lottery Programme, Stewart was also invited by Lehmen to work as dramaturg, dancer and academic consultant on his production of Stationen, funded by TanzWerkstatt and the Podewil, Berlin, and Kaaitheater Brussels and Vooruit Gent, as part of the Berlin Tanzfest in 2003. Finally, he contributed two articles on Stationen for a five volume collection under the same name edited by Sven-Thore Kramm and published in 2003 by the Podewil, Berlin (ISSN: 1612-7161). These articles were the single-authored 'To and Fro and In-Between: the Ontology of the Image in Thomas Lehmen's Stations' (Vol. 4), and 'Round Table Discussion' with Franz Anton Cramer, Thomas Lehmen and Peter Stamer (Vol. 5).
