Project: Research

Description

A research residency hosted by In-Situ, Brierfield, East Lancashire. The project explored collaborative sculptural production methods towards applying material literacy as a means of increasing access to art making, specifically from the context of childcare. Working with my 2-year-old daughter, I observed her engagement with accessible, affordable materials, developing a "kit" which facilitated sculpture construction via manipulation by infant hands. I offered the kit to the wider public via a series of toddler playgroups as a means of testing and gathering data.

Research adopted an auto-ethnographic approach: my dual identities as artist and mother enabled me to enter childcare communities in Brierfield as a peer as well as a researcher.
