Profile

I graduated from University College Dublin, Ireland in 2013 with a BSc in Mathematical Science. Throughout my undergraduate, I received a broad education in Statistics and Pure & Applied Mathematics, but I became interested in pursuing further study, primarily in a statistical field.

I completed the STOR-i Internship in 2012, modelling wave patterns in the North Sea using Extreme Value Theory. This led me to the conclusion that I wanted to pursue PhD study. This summer, I completed an internship as part of the Research in Industrial Projects (RIPS) in University of California, Los Angeles. This project was titled “Linking Social Media to Crime and Disorder” and focused on utilising Twitter as a way of improving the LAPD’s policing strategies with regard to social media monitoring.

Having completed the MRes programme, I am now working on my PhD titled “Physically-Based Statistical Models of Extremes arising from Extratropical Cyclones” under the joint supervision of Jonathan Tawn and Jenny Wadsworth of the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, and Simon Brown of the Met Office. My research focuses on using extreme value methods to produce a more statistically consistent representation of the physics that generate extreme wind and rainfall.
