Headstart summer schools are 4-5 day residential experiences for Y12 students facilitated by the EDT trust. The schools provide students with the opportunity to experience university-style lectures and to work on team-based activities with the support of academics and student ambassadors. Students stay in halls of residence and take part in organised social activities in the evening. In the summer of 2019, the Physics Department delivered a Headstart school for 40 students from across the UK. Led by the department’s engagement lead, Dr. Andy Blake, the school was supported by all the major research groups and the students attended talks and participated in a range of hands-on activities.
