Nuffield Future Researchers is a national engagement programme that provides meaningful and rewarding research experiences for Y12 students, enabling them to develop essential STEM skills by carrying out open-ended research projects under the supervision of academics and research scientists. The programme especially targets students from underserved backgrounds. In the summer of 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, in-person placements were cancelled and the programme was delivered online. The Lancaster Physics Department supported four students from schools and colleges in the North West of England. A pair of remote but hands-on projects, “Discovering the Night Sky” and “Exploring the Radioactive Environment” were developed and supervised online by Dr. Andy Blake. The delivery of these projects was supported by two postgraduate researchers and an outreach officer from the Physics Department. At the end of project, the students presented posters at an online celebration event and had the opportunity to write up their projects for a CREST Gold award.
