The Lancaster Physics Department runs a Science Communication training programme for its postgraduate students. These 1-day workshops focus on developing the communication skills needed for impactful public engagement. The sessions focus on tools and techniques for designing and presenting engagement activities and engaging with non-specialist audiences. The training includes a range of practical exercises, including mini-talks, short written pieces, and team-based demonstrations. The workshops are delivered by “Andrew Jenkins Science”, a small STEM engagement company based in Edinburgh, operated by a Lancaster graduate who is now a successful engagement professional and has built a specialism in Science Communication training. We delivered a pair of training workshops in the 23/24 academic year. The first session was delivered in November 2023 to a group of 8 postgraduate students from the Physics Department. The second session was delivered in July 2024 to a group of 10 staff and research students from across the Faculty of Science and Technology. This second workshop was supported by a FST engagement award, enabling us to broaden our audience and offering.
