Notes on Confirmation Documents

Dataset

Description

This guidance document sets out one way of thinking about Confirmation Documents. As a supervisor who semi-regularly provides feedback on draft Confirmation Documents, I have become aware that many people seem to submit first drafts with similar shortcomings. I write this document in the hope that some of those common pitfalls can be avoided through the provision of early, clear guidance--thereby saving time and effort for both supervisee and supervisor. It is important to note that, by writing and circulating this document, I do not mean to imply that there is one formulaic way in which all Confirmation Documents must be written. Considerable variation is indeed possible between Confirmation Documents because there is considerable variation between PhD projects! But I do hope that the suggested structure will be helpful in many cases, especially where you find yourself staring at a blank screen when considering a particular document section, with inspiration lacking. I do assert that in all cases you will need to think about the kinds of issues that are raised in this document even if, in the end, the way you choose to address those issues is different from the way that I suggest.
