My research regards the development of a combined fast-neutron/gamma-ray computed tomography technique using an isotopic radiation source and a real-time detection system for both fast neutrons and gamma rays. Neutron and gamma-ray computed tomographies (CT) yield different results when imaging the same objects, since the interaction of photons and neutrons in matter is different. Via a combination of gamma and neutron tomography, the potential exists to identify some materials from one another that are otherwise challenging to distinguish using either gamma-ray or neutron tomography in isolation. This particular technique, performed with a CT system that can be assembled in a small laboratory, has potential for industrial applications and/or in-situ assessments and security inspection.
