Prof Michael Doherty is Associate Head of School and the lead for student experience.
Before joining Lancaster he was Principal Lecturer in Law and student experience lead at UCLan. He is a former Chair of the Association of Law Teachers, and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. His teaching awards include the Routledge/ALT Teaching Law with Technology Prize 2015.
Prof Doherty has a longstanding interest in Public Law, has taught the subject for over 30 years and is author of the textbook, Public Law (2nd edn, Routledge, 2018). He has taught, researched and published on civil liberties and on environmental law.
His current research and pedagogy focus is in the developing field of legal design - applying design thinking to legal problems and processes. He is exploring the disciplinarity of, and the cultural barriers to, bringing design thinking into law, and has applied design thinking to legal teaching and curriculum development.
