Abstract

We describe a novel quantum structure in which quantum excitations refer to elementary quanta of "spinning space". Although the quantum model has a classical "membrane" limit, there exists no Newtonian classical system leading to this model that can be written in canonical Hamiltonian form prior to quantisation. It is suggested that such an underlying quantum structure can give rise to a classical geometry for "physical" spacetime whose sources arise from the quantum excitations of space itself.
