A roton-driven mechanism for nucleation of negatively charged vortex rings in isotopically pure 4He.

We have measured the temperature dependence of the vortex nucleation rate due to negative ions in isotopically pure superfluid 4He. We conclude that nucleation proceeds via two independent mechanisms: a temperature-independent "intrinsic" mechanism; and a roton-driven mechanism, dominant above 0.6 K.
