It makes a comparative analysis of the data collected from 20 UK companies, critically examining the role of the designer. It identified a number of original factors used to develop a taxonomy of the detailed characteristics of designers and how they operate in different types of organizations. It also identified the direct and indirect variables that affect behaviour. The paper is significant in that it is one of a small selection of papers on design that have been accepted to this journal and to the wider community of practitioners and academics in the Association of Product Development Management of which there are over 2000 worldwide. It also contributed to Cooper's invitation to join the International network of leading Design Research and Innovation Centres at their meeting in Helsinki in 2005.
