Bibliographic note

Translated into Spanish as La lucha por Barcelona: clase, cultura y conflicto social, 1898-1937 [Madrid: Alianza, 2005]. 381pp. ISBN 8420647276. The monograph was completed during an AHRC-funded period of study leave. The English edition was described in the Spanish daily newspaper ABC (5/2/05) as a 'very important' study. The book was immediately translated into Spanish. In the prologue to the Spanish edition Prof. Paul Preston (LSE) described it as a 'remarkable book' with a 'pioneering methodology' As with the very finest local histories, this is one that casts its light far beyond the immediate boundaries of the Catalan capital.' In his The Spanish Civil War: Reaction, Revolution and Revenge (2006), Preston also noted its 'seminal importance' tremendous range and depth'. According to a review in Viento Sur (no. 87, July 2006), it is 'an unforgettable and indispensable book ' full of stunning discoveries, in the vein of the masterpieces of social and cultural history.' According to Jordi Canyiss', writing in Canal Cultura, the book 'has invited me to see Barcelona through con otros ojos'. A review in the German publication Iberoamericana described it as an 'innovative book' (Iberoamericana, 26, 2007) and a review in the Journal of Contemporary History described it as ""Ealham's geopolitical mapping opens Barcelona and its inhabitants to fascinating new insights"".
