Abstract

Experiments by D.N. Paulson and J.C. Wheatley, described in a recent issue of Physical Review Letters (41, 561; 1978) provide the strongest evidence yet that liquid 'He anticipates its superfluid transition. It seems that, when the liquid is cooled towards the transition temperature Tc, its properties first start to deviate from the behaviour characteristic of the normal (non-superfluid) liquid at a temperature which is significantly above Tc, almost as though the liquid somehow 'knows' that it is about to become superfluid.
