N2 - An overview of manganese-based drugs with a focus on CO-releasing molecules is presented. Synthesis, characterization and biological activity from important literature are summarized. A range of topics are discussed including: Modes of CO-release, emerging design rules to obtain particular modes of CO-release, and developing CO-releasing molecules (CO-RMs) to release CO with low energy visible light.
