Abstract

Nicholas Callan (1799-1864) was an Irish priest who carried out research on the fundamentals of electromagnetism while employed as a professor at Maynooth College, in addition to extensive theological works. His most important claim to fame was his invention of the induction coil, but he also worked on batteries, galvanisation (patented), simple electric motors, and arc lights.
