Profile

James uses chemistry-climate and Earth system models to explore the impact of anthropogenic emissions on the atmosphere and the wider Earth system. He is particularly interested in understanding how stratospheric ozone is projected to change in the future. James has extensive experience developing and using chemistry-climate and Earth system models, and has contributed to the development of the UKCA chemistry scheme and the UK Earth System Model (UKESM1).

James is a chapter co-author on the 2022 Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion, and a co-author on a UK Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy report exploring the global atmospheric composition and climate implications of a future shift to a hydrogen economy. He is a co-lead of the Role of Stratosphere-Troposphere Exchange in the Earth System (ROSTEES) Working Group of the Tropospheric Ozone Assessment Report Phase II.
