Abstract

The contemporary business environment is witnessing considerable change and uncertainty and as a result, organisations - regardless of size and market activity - have become increasingly vulnerable to external forces and market disruptions. In order to remain competitive in these unpredictable times, organisations have had to continually reinvent themselves through reappraising their structures, systems and strategic objectives. Historically, designers have played an important role in creating innovative solutions when barriers and challenging circumstances are present. This chapter, discusses business cases of embracing digital tools and technologies, specifically data, AI and robots, along with their benefits and challenges. The authors also discuss the role and value of designers in accelerating recovery and business prosperity during periods of extreme complexity and uncertainty. The authors' aspiration of this chapter is for it to act as a guide for designers and businesses who are working to overcome the crisis and to also help them build resilience for potential future threats.
