N2 - An analogue electronic experiment is used to demonstrate that large fluctuations in a thermal equilibrium system exhibit time-reversal symmetry and, furthermore, that they arise through the action of an optimal force that can be predicted on the basis of Hamiltonian fluctuation theory.
