Abstract

In this evidence, I explain that the UK’s security and prosperity depend on a safe and stable maritime order. The combined effects of climate change on marine ecosystems and rising geopolitical tensions threaten freedom of navigation and maritime security. Also, the UK critical maritime infrastructures and overseas territories are at risk from the direct effects of climate change such as sea level rise and extreme weather events. I suggest that preventing, mitigating, and responding to these threats requires targeted investments in naval forces, maritime domain awareness, early warning capabilities, and infrastructural protection.
