Roton assisted vortex nucleation in isotopically pure superfluid 4He.

Measurements are presented of the rate nu at which negative ions nucleate quantised vortex rings in isotopically pure superfluid 4He for temperatures 0.3 < T < 0.8 K and electric fields 6 x 10^4 < E < 1.5 X 10^6 V/m. It is shown that there is a temperature dependent component of nu, which is accurately proportional to the thermal roton density provided that due allowance is made for the drag arising from ion-excitation scattering.
